Now that we have your pc setup for a static IP of 192.168.1.100 and connected directly to port 1 on your router we can proceed to preparing to flash. What we are going to do is put the router in the management mode aka recovery mode. To do this you need to unplug your router. Hold the reset button on the back while plugging the power back in. Continue holding the reset button for an addition 30 seconds. After holding down the reset button browse to http://192.168.1.1 and you should be greeted by a white screen with a browse looks kinda like this:

Now use the browse to locate the vxworkskiller bin you downloaded either the for the Gv8 or the GSv7 and click apply. After that is successful, power cycle your router by unplugging it and the plugging it back in. Wait a 2-3 minutes and then unplug is and plug it in again. Wait another 2-3 minutes and the open the TFTP program. It looks like this:

Fill in the form using 192.168.1.1 as the server, leave the password blank and browse for the dd-wrt.v24_micro_wrt54gv8.bin file. When all filled out it should look like this:

After the TFTP program has completed you should be able to browse to http://192.168.1.1 and check out the new admin interface. The only thing left is to change your IP address back to automatic. Have a good one and have fun with your new router.

Cypher - Unable to Connect From:67.167.199.xxx | 2008-01-27 00:01:47
I am unable to connect to the router after the upgrade. When I check the ipconfig I get a 169. address.

I followed the instructions to the letter and it seems to have bricked my router. I get the 169 address and a notice saying limited connectivity. Right after tftp said it was successful in flashing the firmware, I was unable to navigate to 192.168.1.1. Any suggestions?

Is this secure? I went to the official instructions on the DD-WRT forum and I was reading a lot of people were having problems. Have those been fixed with this tutorial?

avatar I read the original post and then went through the rest of the posts in that topic and read the changes that people made to the procedure. These changes are included in this tutorial.

Does the micro version of DD-WRT allow the router to be used as a wireless bridge?

Hello. I would like to ask you, that is this really working, because I don't want to kill my router, and in another article I read, that presently it doesn't work on WRT54Gv7.0. If somebody tried it, and worked, please write me/us here, because then I want to install it onto mine. Another question: WRT54Gv7.0 doesn't have any processor installed. How can Linux be run on it at all??? Thanks! Johhny

lwu - well done !! From:70.243.125.xxx | 2008-03-16 10:00:57
nicely done instructions and explanations.

flashed my linksys 54g over two weeks ago and it's perfomed perfectly.

much thanks for the complete, through steps and screen shots that are so well done.

(note, on one screen shot showing how to change the pc ip address, the ip address example shows 192.168.1.101 and i believe it should be 192.168.1.100)

So I found the answer to my quandry on the v5 page - you cannot do an SD card - because it's micro and not standard. So I have a question - is there any way I could replace the flash/ram so that I could install a standard image in a v5 chassi? Thanks again,
Mihir - Thanks From:70.88.105.xxx | 2008-05-06 08:26:44
I really appreciate step by step information. Very useful for novice like me. I did not make the IP static, and i did not have tftp protocol. I will try and I am sure it will be successful. Thanks foe great work.
Eric - BRICKED From:67.166.228.xxx | 2008-05-10 14:38:00
I followed instructions exactly and it bricked my brand new GSv7. Everything went fine until the last step, after which I couldn't open the admin page and the power light did not come on (but the port 1 and internet lights did). According to another site "There are at least two types of flash chips that are used on the v7 router. Using this method with an Intel-type flash chip will brick your router. Currently there is no solution for using vxworkskiller with the Intel-chip v7 routers." - I wish I knew that before hand.
