Page 1 of 4 In this article we will flash one of the newer WRT54Gv8 or the WRT54GSv7 with dd-wrt.
 Welcome to my latest tutorial. In this tutorial I will discuss how to flash DD-WRT to the newest incarnation of everyones favorite router, the WRT54G Version 8. Flashing this router isn't as difficult as the V5,5.1, or 6, but there still is a little trick to it. Apparently in this version of the router Linksys put a bootloader flash protection into place, but like always it was circumvented. So if you are inclined to flash DD-WRT onto your new toy keep on reading!
As a matter of precaution, I must inform you that these actions you are about to take very well could turn your pretty new router into a pretty new paperweight, only to be revived by the wonderful and mysterious JTAG cable. Calling Linksys for support after you have tried to defile their router will most likely end with you being deafened by their roars of laughter over the phone. The only responsibility I take is when you get that warm joy of either A) having a shiny new Linux based router that could do MUCH more than it could before or B) sticking it to Linksys for sticking you with crappy sub-par firmware. However any damage to you, your sanity, or your router is not my responsibility.
ONLY and I mean ONLY do this from a computer wired directly to the router. NEVER attempt to flash firmware over a wireless connection. Preferably have the computer your flashing wire to LAN Port 1 on your router or the TFTP session later may not work.

Now to the real meat of the article. You will need the following 3 files.
Also this will work on a WRT54GS Version 7, but you will need this file instead of the vxworkskillerGv8-v3.bin. Just substitute it when I say to use the Gv8-v3 file::
Once you have all of those downloaded we should be good to go. First off you need to set your computer to use a static IP. I'm actually going to cover that in two different pages. If you have XP goto the next page, if you have Vista skip to page 3. If you already know how to setup a static IP the tutorial will resume on page 4.
