Now we have a working SSH daemon running at boot on La Fonera, now lets delve into locking FON out of your box. If you made it through working with VI before, this will be a breeze. First we need to open the thinclient.sh file on La Fonera to do this enter this:

vi /bin/thinclient

Now your in VI again. We are looking to edit the very last line and add one. Goto the very last line and comment it out (add a # in front of it). Now after that line add this line:

cp /tmp/.thinclient.sh /tmp/thinclient-$(date '+$Y%m%d-%H%M')

The result should look like this:

Now once again hit ESC, and type :wq and return to the prompt. You've done it. You now have a hacked La Fonera with SSH enabled and FON doesn't have access to your box. Have a good one.

hi
what are the advantages of it?
admin Super Administrator | 2006-12-28 00:47:08
avatar The possible advantages of this hack is the ability in the future to change the firmware. By making it so FON cannot change your router you are able to keep this version of firmware so the exploits aren't patched.

what if i push and hold 'reset button'? Can these changes be undone? can all these new settings reset without hurting la fonera? thanks.
admin Super Administrator | 2006-12-28 00:48:16
avatar They can be undone, just do the reverse of the procedure and reset La Fonera.

xAGiBel - Hack the 0.7.1-r2 firmware! :P From:87.16.143.xxx | 2007-01-09 14:58:00
I've just discovered how to enable the fonera to open the ssh daemon with the 0.7.1-r2 firmware.
It's really simple.
You've gotta disconnect from the internet (or just power off the adsl modem/router), and reset the fonera.
To reset the fonera, hold down the reset button, on the bottom of the fonera for 30 seconds.
Then, unplug the power cable from the fonera and connect it again.
Then, hold on until both of the fonera's lights turn on (wifi and internet).
Then connect to the fonera with a browser.
To connect through wired connection, set the computer ip to 169.254.255.2, netmask 255.255.0.0 and open internet explorer to http://169.254.255.1.
Then use the 0.7.1-r1 firmware's instructions.
To connect through wifi connection, simply connect to 192.168.10.1 and follow the 0.7.1-r1 firmware's instructions.

Tips:
- If you're using a wired connection and you want to see the configuration page of the fonera without changing your ip, you can edit /etc/firewall.user and make copy/paste of the two ssh lines; then change the port from 22 to 80!
- I recommend you to upgrade to the 0.7.1-r1 firmware: there're much improvements like the ntpclient (to update the date/time) and the new port-forwarding tool (via browser). If you wanna do it, you dan download this firmware [http://stefans.datenbruch.de/lafonera/]here (at the bottom of the page)[[http://stefans.datenbruch.de/lafonera/]]
- Are you tired seeing the date on the fonera looking like "1st january 2000" and wanna update it?
You can do it with the 0.7.1-r1 firmware, renaming the file /etc/init.d/ntpclient into /etc/init.d/S50ntpclient and every time the fonera boots the clock will be updated (there's also a cron job anyway)
- I really recommend you to change the default password... with the sshd open and the default user/pass anyone can do a "rm -rf /"and brick your fonera!!

Cheers,
xAGiBel

Cherek - Invitations for the free foner From:83.86.117.xxx | 2007-01-21 16:15:57
First off: Great job to all who are trying to upgrade (as I see it ) La Fonera. But I have a question: Iwanted to send an invitation (for a free Fonera)to my parents' email account so I could use a Fonera there. But so far I didn't get any promotional code or anything for a free fonera. Now I read somewhere that you need to have your Fonera working before you can send such an invitation. Is this true? And if so: How will the hack influence this? Or is it better to connect first and hack later (if possible)?
Woeka From:145.94.21.xxx | 2007-01-23 16:28:49
You first have to get your fonera working and hook it up to the internet. The hack is only enabling ssh and preventing fon to upgrade my fonera to a other firmware.
Anonymous From:81.206.136.xxx | 2007-01-24 09:26:53
so i got it running, but is there already a hacked firmware ?
Woeka From:145.94.21.xxx | 2007-01-24 13:26:26
btw make sure that you don't connect to the internet before you allow ssh and disallow updates. After the update to 0.7.1-r2 a reboot/reset won't get it back to 0.7.1-r1 (atleast mine doesn't)
Woeka From:145.94.21.xxx | 2007-01-31 11:21:36
Just try it more often, a couple of times reset of aprox a minute whitout the internet cable did the trick and I finaly got it back to 0.7.1 r1.

after several tries i managed to get reset/reboot to downgrade after reading from some blog that it might help if you keep the power supply disconnected 5-10mins... hope this helps
jasira From:85.134.16.xxx | 2007-01-26 04:01:27
So, after I applied the "hack" the box refuses to get proper ip from my adsl box...any idea what causes this? Because when I reset the changes and so on the box works like it should.
Woeka From:145.94.21.xxx | 2007-01-31 08:27:17
Had the same, did not get a ip form the dhcp. But now the problem is gone ... i didn't do anything other then leave it on for a couple of days without the utp cable then put the cable in and took off the power for a sec to let it reboot.
Woeka From:145.94.21.xxx | 2007-01-31 17:07:10
Did you try a static ip address?

Is a web-based interface supported now? I'm just used to the DD-WRT simplicity on my Linksys WRT54G. If so, screenshots would be great!

DD-WRT Fonera portJust for fun i ported DD-WRT to the FON Fonera device today. its not finished at all points but seems to work good.
you may download it here here if you are know what you're doing.

at this point i would also like to thank the OpenWRT developers Imre Kaloz and Felix Fietkau for all the 2.6 Linux Kernel porting work they spended into it to get the AR531X devices running

antonio - fonera as Repeater From:85.41.146.xxx | 2007-03-10 12:09:49
here www.blogin.it/fonera4.php there is a script that forces La Fonera as Repeater and Access Point (Range Expander or Wireless Client Bridge). It acts as an appliance: a device that you can place anywhere and it will wirelessly repeat the strongest signal, or the desired one, onto another wireless network.
NemeZis - Date format error? From:81.184.33.xxx | 2007-12-31 17:27:11
The last command on thinclient is
cp /tmp/.thinclient.sh /tmp/thinclient-$(date '+$Y%m%d-%H%M')

but i think it should be
cp /tmp/.thinclient.sh /tmp/thinclient-$(date '+%Y%m%d-%H%M')

$Y should be %Y
is it right?

Thanks
